Political PartiesThe ruling party of North Korea is the Workers' Party of North Korea(WPK). There are 2 other parties other than WPK, which are the Korea Social Democratic Party, and the Chondoist Chongu Party. In theory, the one that holds the most power is the congress. Kim Jong Un is currently serving as the First Secretary and Central Military Commission chairman. Unlike other countries' governments, informal politics play a bigger role. Formal institutions have far less political powers.

Major Political ChangesWPK had a proper congress until the 6th congress, which Kim Il Sung appointed his son, Kim Jong Il as the successor, in October 1980. North Korea changed from the orthodox communism by embracing Juche idea over Marxism-Leninism. Even today, the 6th congress remains to be the last party congress held.
